چکیده
The semantic structure of texts can be described both at the local microlevel and at a more global macrolevel. A model for text comprehension based on this notion accounts for the formation of a coherent semantic text base in terms of a cyclical process constrained by limitations of working memory. Furthermore, the model includes macro-operators, whose purpose is to reduce the Information in a text base to its gist, that is. the theoretical macrostructure. These operations are under the control of a schema, which is a theoretical formulation of the comprehender's goals. The macroprocesses are predictable only when the control schema can be made explicit. On the production side, the model is concerned with the generation of recall and summarization protocols. This process is partly reproductive and partly constructive, involving the inverse operation of the macrooperators. The model is applied to a paragraph from a psychological research report, and methods for the empirical testing of the model are developed. متن کاملReading Comprehension: A Conceptual Framework from Word Meaning to Text Meaning
Reading comprehension is widely agreed to be not one, but many things. At the least, it is agreed to entail cognitive processes that operate on many different kinds of knowledge to achieve many different kinds of reading tasks. Emerging from the apparent complexity, however, is a central idea: Comprehension occurs as the reader builds one or more mental representations of a text message (e.g., ...
متن کاملReusing processes and documenting processes: toward an integrated framework
This paper presents a cognitive typology of reuse processes, and a cognitive typology of documenting processes. Empirical studies on design with reuse and on software documenting provide evidence for a generalized cognitive model. First, these studies emphasize the cyclical nature of design: cycles of planning, writing and revising occur. Second, natural language documentation follows the hiera...
متن کاملMultidimensional Situation Models
The research landscape examining situation models in discourse has been transformed considerably in the last 20 years. Van Dijk and Kintsch (1983) originally included the concept of a situation model to address issues that were problematic for earlier versions of their theory (Kintsch & van Dijk, 1978). Specifically, van Dijk and Kintsch (1983) argued that situation models were necessary to exp...
متن کاملNeural and Behavioral Indicators of Integration Processes across Sentence Boundaries
A fundamental characteristic of a text is that its sentences are not unrelated but cohere. To understand a text, a reader must therefore cognitively establish specific relations between a new statement and the previously read text. The coherence between sentences can be established by different kinds of integration processes: anaphora resolution, memory processes that resonate for words with re...
